What’s in My Heart
By: Gulrukh Shafiq, Grade 11
Absurd things,
like paper clips. Needles thread and scissors,
far away from each other. An old-fashioned camera with extra memory capacity.
Some chocolate wrappers, too perfect to be trashed.
A few unplanted seeds waiting for life. Pencil shavings scattered her and there.
But more importantly, expensive restaurants, unpaid bills, unsettled quarrels.
Ending with fits of laughter.
Pieces of a jigsaw puzzle that can be solved when there’s enough time
Some things that could be sweet. Sugar that is poisoned, bitter honey. Forbidden destinations. Tears harmonizing with happiness.
Bad hair days, seesaws and so many flowers deprived of their life.
Unexpressed thoughts, undelivered messages. Strange regrets.
Disgusting-looking delicious food. Sounds of thumps and vibration.
Perplexity in confusion, unanswered questions.
Someone closed in a glass jar, someone I think is me.
